Join the Byron Forest Preserve District for the annual Ogle Bird Count on Saturday, May 4. Some species expected are blue jays, blue birds, meadow larks, and turkey vultures. Bring binoculars and field guides. Count will be on forest preserve properties and other Ogle County natural areas. One of the largest self-guided art drives in the midwest, the Mississippi River Valley Art Drive (MRVAD) boasts of 50 participating sights, representing over 200 artists, upward of 30 mediums showing off a multitude of perspectives and techniques. Individual artists may demonstrate from their home studios or galleries, some may present work in their preferred retail location, while some sights will offer classes.
This self-guided art drive is unique in several aspects. First, it offers local art work from Dubuque and Galena all the way along the Mississippi to Galesburg. Secondly, the variety of art encompasses everyone's needs: decorating, gifting, adornment and practicality!

The 2nd Thursday of each month come to Market Street Commons in historic downtown Mt Carroll for Five Minutes of Fame on Market & Main – Open Mic Night featuring Music, Poetry and Storytelling. The Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge sponsor free Monthly Bird Walks/Drives the 2nd Saturday of each month throughout the year. Participants will meet at Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center located at 7071 Riverview Rd, Thomson, unless notified otherwise. Transportation for the event is provided. The areas we visit will depend upon current weather conditions and water levels of the Mississippi River and surrounding small waterways. Bring your binoculars and your camera. Binoculars and field guides will be available for loan if you do not have them. When weather permits we will be incorporating our new eight passenger golf cart, available for those with mobility challenges, into some of the bird walks on the refuge. The annual Friends of the Windmill plant sale will be at the old fire station building (Robert Fulton Commons) on the corner of 4th Street and 10th Avenue in Fulton on Saturday, May 11, 2013, from 8am to Noon. Are some of your plants too crowded and need to be split? Do you have a plant that you just don't like anymore? Bring them to the sale and we will find a new home for them. Plants can be brought in plastic pots, plastic bags, or card board flats. If you need advice on digging up plants, please contact Judy at 815-589-4101 or Carol at 815-589-2174. Plants may be brought to the old fire station on Friday evening, May 10, from 4pm to 7pm. The plant sale is organized by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and Friends of the Windmill. All profits from the sale will be given to the Friends of the Windmill for the beautification of the Windmill Area.
