'Steamboatin' & The Union Victory' Program ( 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm )
The Volunteer Millers at De Immigrant windmill in Fulton, will host their fifth monthly program of the year on Thursday, May 31, at 6:00 PM. The presentation will be held at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111 – 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, Illinois, across from the authentic Dutch windmill. Brian "Fox" Ellis will be performing "The Role of Steamboatin' in the Union Victory." The program is sponsored by the Volunteer Millers, FACE, and the Illinois Humanities Council.
Since 1980, Brian Ellis has traveled the United States and the world as a performer, educator, and storyteller. He began in the art of storytelling while hunting with uncles and cousins in Ohio. They would sit around the fire in the dark and tell tales of family, heroes, and adventures. He has a college degree in education with an emphasis on storytelling and has been a teacher, counselor, and mentor. He has a passion for history, environmental issues, and local cultures. He is the author of 8 books.
For the program in Fulton, Mr. Ellis based his presentation on the pilot's logs of Captain Henry Detweiller. He steps on stage immersing the audience in the vital, though unsung, role of steamboats in the siege of Vicksburg, the capture of Natchez, and the horrors of Shiloh. Captain Henry Detweiller was there and shares an eyewitness account. He delivered troops and supplies during the Civil War and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln and rival of Mark Twain. Fox brings these stories to life in a first person monologue that shares a unique voice in this important chapter of river history.
The Volunteer Millers invite the public to attend this free event. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. This program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly. The facility is handicap accessible.
