The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) has developed a series of 16 gazebos & 40 interpretive murals that highlight the development of the historic Lincoln Highway and how it affected the many communities across northern Illinois. The Fulton gazebo panels include information about Fulton's rich Dutch heritage, businesses along the Lincoln Highway, and its location near the Mississippi River. The Lyons-Fulton Bridge was credited as the "official crossing" over the Mississippi River for travelers heading west. Unique photos captured on the Fulton panel include the Lyons Fulton Bridge, a tourist campground, and a car repair shop which is still in existence today and now known as Wendel Repair. The interpretive mural is in production and will be installed by summer 2010.
This project is funded by grant dollars from the Federal Hwy Admin. with support from Ill. Dept. of Transportation and the Illinois Bureau of Tourism. When all the gazebos & murals are installed (2011), a print piece will be developed so that visitors are able to locate them as they travel the Illinois Lincoln Highway corridor. Keep watching the ILHC website for new gazebo & mural locations. For a Lincoln Highway Coalition Visitor Guide call or go to website.
